The 18th Int Winter Challenge |
|
The 18th Winter Challenge starts this weekend and in typical Monte Carlo Rally fashion from bygone years there will be two start points. All competitors running an even number will start from Noordwijk while the odd (numbered) crews start from Chester. The first leg on Sunday/Monday takes the crews from their start locations via some passage controls and practice regularities to a night regularity starting in Northern France. After this easy run through the night things get more serious once breakfast is out of the way and crews make their way to Beaune for the first over night halt. Leg Two takes the crews from Beaune to Aix-les-Bains via some regularities and a secret route to be handed out that morning. Wednesday is split into two legs, the day leg taking the crews from Aix-les-Bains to Gap via The Alps and old Monte Classics such as Col du Granier and Col du Porte. After a supper halt there is a four hour night section taking the competitors to Digne-les-Bains and the end of leg4. Leg5 on the final day with 4 regularities takes the remaining crews to the finish in Monte Carlo with a run over the Col de Turini included.
Full route details are available HERE
Entry list is HERE
Lets hope the Irish crews survive the hectic schedule and make it to the finish next Thursday.
Joe Reynolds/Frank Hussey 1955 - MG Magnette ZB
Frank Fennell/Kevin Savage 1962 - Alfa Romeo Giulia Super
Richard McAllister/Jo McAllister 1960 - Volvo 122S
Eamonn Byrne/Iain Tullie 1962 - Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint
I hope to be getting some updates during the week and will post up the news when it arrives
Rumors are that Ronnie has extra locks on the back of the truck for this one

After Leg2 Eamonn and Ian are in 2nd sandwiched in the middle of the two Wignall Alfas as Paul Wignall and Mark Appleton lead by 24 seconds with Jayne Wignall and Peter Rushforth just 21 seconds back in 3rd, Frank Fennell and Kevin Savage are fourth in their Alfa 50 seconds off 3rd. The McAllister Volvo has dropped back to 18th overall.
Howard Warren and Guy Woodcock lead the post '62 section with a total penalty of just 54 seconds

Looks like a bit of a disaster this morning for Eamonn and Iain dropping 2:30 on the first regularity but only dropping 29 seconds on the remaining 5 of the day, this has dropped them to 6th overall, with Paul Wignall still leading from Jayne Wignal, Frank Fennell now up to 3rd.
Leg 4 is on tonight with just Leg 5 to be completed before the finish in Monte Carlo tomorrow afternoon

Bit of a change in fortune last night with Eamonn and Iain dropping the least amount of time on the night section to jump back into the lead starting todays final leg. They were the only crew to drop less than a minute on Leg 4, Paul Wignall is second 34seconds off and Frank Fennell is still third.
Fingers crossed things go ok today

Just had a phone call from Monte carlo, the first of the crews arriving and the good news is that Eamonn and Iain have held onto their overnight lead and won the event. Frank Fennell third.
