Lanes Rules |
|
There are / were recently comments posted ( Stopastride.com and Facebook) regarding Lanes Rallies running under ' Targa ' regulations.
And car eligibility thereunder ! ! !
Peter Moreland Moore has written an extensive analysis on these rules on Stopastride.com ; for which he is to be thanked ! It is at
http://www.stopastride.com/component/k2/msa-rules-for-lanes-and-road-rallies
They are of interest to those who travel to these events.
I have not as yet reviewed the contents, but will post when I have done so.
Tim
P.S. Relavance to ROI ? We have written our own rules, and what follows on from that will be. The outcome from the above may help or hinder numbers travelling our direction

This is a rather amazing piece of work. The research is done and and arguments put forward in a coherent and rational fashion. All 9 pages of it in my saved version !
: - nothing much has really changed.
I have a couple of points arising ; but personally. Not for public consumption !
Down the line does not seem to be too much of a problem ; I cannot find rules changes with effect from 1 January 2014, but from 2015 the engine must be of the same manufacture as the car, and manifolds as standard. Dont know that this would affect many people.
Again : - well done Peter !

ive been trying to follow this, but it still appears confusing. is the handbrake rule in or out? also, does the manifold rule apply to retro's? i dont think i can even get a standard manifold, let alone be bother swapping it all over... looks like the NTBDR may be my first and last lanes - pity

Lanes events under MSA rules |
|
A few observations for what they are worth. The Clubs in NI met recently and we have tried to come up with a standard interpretation of the MSA Blue Book.
There was some confusion earlier when a consultation document was circulated by the MSA and many people assumed the changes it described would automatically be implemented, however based on feedback received only some were. Therefore until publication of the Blue Books for 2014 and 2015 I wouldn't be inclined to assume anything!
For those who dont have one to hand the full Blue Book is available online at www.msauk.org
On hydraulic handbrakes, the only reference is in R19.7.6. for cars registered before 31 Dec 1981 which prohibits brake balance adjusting systems and hydraulic handbrakes for cars running in this class.
For anyone thinking of doing the Ballynahinch Lanes event on 9 Nov, I will try to answer any queries as best I can. The event Scrutineer will be George Kennedy

Yes it'll be a bit of a nuisance for some of us, we'll have to spend the winter time building a new road rally spec 2.1 pinto and find where we threw all that trim, bumpers etc when we originally built the Escort back in 1988.
Laura, my 16 year old daughter and navigator is livid pointing out that it's crazy that we could run a 2.2 fuel injected MX5 putting out 200+ BHP with no roof, no rollcage, no harness's, no proper seats, no fire extinguishers etc etc while our car which has all these things and is much safer and much slower with a pretty standard BDA putting out less than 120 BHP is banned.
My wife did suggest that we take her MX5 to the Ballynahinch event asking wasn't that really why you bought it but Laura said "mum have you seen the way dad drives on a rally, there's no way I'd sit with him in a car like that."
Cheap BDA for sale - or swap for good pinto.
All the best, Neil.

Sounds like a real pain. Who has a 2.2 MX-5? Sounds nuts...

When enquiring about upgrading my wife's MX5 I was told of a couple of companies that can do you a 190+ BHP NB engine or a 200+ NC engine and that's without forced induction. I was also given the names of a couple of guys who had these engines and who I could speak to about them.
Anyway it looks like a Zetec, or possibly a Duratec into the Escort may be the only way to go. It'll be sad to lose the BDA but such is the way of these things
Talking with one or two people at the Larne event it appears that the ANICC have set up a proper "steering group" to look at Lanes Rallies and the way they are going to be run up here - it'll be interesting to see what they come up with. Only trouble is that it leaves it a bit hard to make any real long term decision as far as car/engine prep is concerned.
All the best, Neil.

Lanes Rules |
|
For the latest from Ballynahinch & District Motor Club on our Lanes Rally on 9th Nov see the new Bulletin on the Club website. It contains some clarifications on technical rules for cars. We have received a great entry so far but places are still available!

just to save beating around the bush, i have an entry done for the UAC rally on the 27th, the car has bike carbs fitted. do i need to scrap the entry now?
These rules just seem totally unnecessary

From what I have gathered the new rules do not come into play until January next year. However it is the choice of the club wether to implement them until then. Ballynahinch have chosen to use the new rules to as it was put to me " to get drivers used to the new rules, to give them an idea of what is and isnt allowed".
UAC may or may not decide to implement them I guess we will have to wait and see. Personally I hope they dont as it may be the last lanes I get to do before the new rules come into play.

Interestingly the "new rules" from the MSA came into force at the start of 2013 but for most of the year clubs and/or competitors chose to ignore them or possibly didn't fully understand them. I can fully understand clubs needing to stick to the rules - it's all fine and dandy ignoring them until something goes wrong and then the MSA and the Insurers will wipe their hands of the whole thing.
Not that I'm an old "stick-in-the-mud" but I had to get my daughter and navigator Laura to show me this "Facebook" thing so I could have a good read and a bit of a laugh at times to the thread on there.
All the best, Neil.

so whats the story here then? Its not an RS1800, and boreham is not the manufacturer
not trying to stir the pot in anyway, just wondering on the loophole
8.1.3.
Vehicles must not have wheel arch extensions, unless fitted by the manufacturer as a standard item to the body shape.

Giving the club and officials the benefit of the doubt, what I think has happened is that someone has said R19.3 allows "period modifications" for Historic cars but what they have failed to understand is that R19.1.2 and R19.1.3 also states that these same Historic cars must still comply with R18.1 to 18.6 and also 75 to 81 cars must also meet FIA Gp1 or Gp3 regs.
If I had thought for one minute that I also could have gotten away with that I'd have entered my car as a BDA is surely a period mod for a Mk1 Escort.
Oh and by the way you don't see many 1972 "EIA" registered Mk2 Escorts about.
All the best, Neil.
