Tripmeter restrictions |
|
Folks,
I noticed in the regs for the TDC Retro that tripsmeters with an average speed calculator are not allowed. Is this the case for all retro events?
Thanks,
J.

I went through the MI yearbook and couldn't find any restriction. I saw that site but as it's UK based I didn't take it as applying here.
I now have an expensive tripmeter I can't use......

An expensive omission for me
I'll have to take a few photos and put it up for sale. It's brand new and I didn't fit it to the car but I did modify the loom at the weekend to fit a 4-pin plug & socket so it could be removed easily.
Any ideas on the type of users who might be interested in it so I'll know where to advertise?
Thanks,
J.

Buying an autotest car
Come to a few events
(Maybe marshall)
Talk to Eamonn Byrne, Ronnie Griffin and a few others.
Maybe do a couple of events in a standard or road car.
Basically: do your research, especially what sort of car and class you want: before you spend the hard earned.

J , and any newcomers. I posted above when J first joined. You need to be out there at events, talking to people, finding out whats happening. The sorts of motorsports you are interested in are more about experiencing them than learing by blog/ the net. In fact, we have some right technophobes

Thanks Tim, I appreciate what you're saying but you could still end up buying the wrong item if your relying on word of mouth. I don't think it's too much to ask that the governing body has correct regulations published.

J Coming along etc will give you the steer on what’s happening because the people who are coming up with most of the 'local' (MI specific) regs. are the people you will meet.
I had a long, hard look because my instinct was you had missed something. But I can’t see it anywhere either !
I hope by way of explanation, and as some small consolation, what happens is that the yearbook and regs get updated and ' bits' get corrected or revised over the years or between years. And it doesn’t hang together in its entirety. Unfortunately its only when someone (new usually) comes along and experiences the wrong side of the point that the deficiency is identified and corrected for next time out. It has happened before and is a 'way of the world' thing.
Theres worse in that issues like this have been part and parcel of motrosport protests for as long as I can remember and before.
I reckon Piers is right; see if you can offload it and then get a suitable one for Retro events. Hope it doesn't cost you

Tim,
I definitely see the benefits of seeing what others are doing which is why I've done very little to my car so far until I get out in it and pick up info from others. I thought the tripmeter was a no brainer as it's definitely needed for the retros which is why after I spent time checking the MI yearbook for specific restrictions I went ahead and purchased.
Please don't think I'm having a go at anyone here, I'm just pointing out that a restriction like the average speed calculator on tripmeters needs to documented.
J.

Quote from the TDC event regulations
EQUIPMENT: Halda type tripmeters are recommended. Brantz, Terratrip, and similar electronic odometers(tripmeters) are allowed, but all forms of instruments which include any electronic average speed calculatorsare forbidden (including handheld instruments), as are two way radios. In compliance with Motorsport Ireland regulations, ALL forms of GPS equipment, whether car-mounted, hand-held, or otherwise, are forbidden under pain of exclusion.
Halda's are period equipment -driven gear operated and not electronic and therefore allowed
There is a thing called a halda speedpilot which shows how you are doing in maintaining an average speed but I think they are only acurate enough to work as a guide on retro events.
The Halda twinmaster is a tripmeter - either one or two meters - again gear operated and possibly ok for tetros though i have no experience of one on such events.
They can be found on ebay but they are a bit serious now

Hi J, you can put it on www.irish-rallying.com ,they use these type of clocks for Stage Rallying as they don't have any restrictions for average speeds etc.

Good news, I managed to sell the tripmeter
Ok before I make another mistake, I just want to make sure, the Brantz International 2 Pro is ok for Retros isn't it?

Hi J, Its the International 2 you want.. The S Pro version has the speed averaging on it... I think on the older models they used to call it the Pro, but looking on the brantz site now they only list the 'International 2' and 'S Pro'
Very impressed with that quick sale...

On the Don Barrow site, they have the International 2 Pro and International 2 S Pro so I think you're right it's the 2 Pro which doesn't have the average speed calculator and the 2 S Pro does.
I have to say I was surprised by how quickly it sold too
