Trailer advice |
|
Hi, looking at buying a trailer really soon.
What are the pros and cons of single versus double axle?
We were leaning towards a single for manoeuvrability and weight but a double has just come up for sale at similar money.
Bearing in mind that it will be towed with car, not big 4x4 or van.
Brian James clubman is the double.
Single is also a Brian James

Double axle trailers are more stable in my opinion, with single axle placement of the car is more critical to getting the nose weight correct. With a single axle you'll definitely need a spare wheel, with a double you might manage to get home with a puncture.

Also, for a heads up, in Ireland the law states you must tow with a 4x4 now.
For trailer, double axle, for safety reasons with such weight on-board.

It's probably fair enough as you used to see some sketchy rigs going down the road. It is unlikely that a loaded trailer will weigh in below the towing capacity of family saloon.
Also, it is likely you will need BE licence as the combined rig may be over 3500kg.

I just checked the permitted gross weight in my owners manual. It’s 2205 kg. Car being towed is approximately 1000 kg. Trailer I’d have to check again but approx 400 kg.
The total weight of car trailer and competition car should be 3000 kg or less so I should be okay.
Bought the double earlier. Was in good condition at a reasonable price
