Extremely shocking and sad news. I've known Cathal since the late eighties. He was a lovely, jovial and kind person. I recall a particularly good time in his company, when one Friday night in 1989 in the Magic Carpet pub, as closing time approached, Cathal arrived in. He announced that he was just about to head north to the start of the Circuit of Ireland Rally and wondered if anyone would like to join him. I eagerly put my hand up and jumped into the passenger seat of his company Opel Omega (Cathal was working for Opel at the time) and off we went. Over the next two and a half days, we had precious little sleep, and then only in the car, as we attempted to get to as many stages as possible over the long weekend. I think we might have been in contention if there had been a prize for the largest number of stages visited. Cathal was really on the ball when it came to figuring out where to be and how to get there. It was a real blast and a really memorable weekend. He will be dearly missed.

Lads, Cathal’s sister Grainne has been in touch with me and has asked if 10-15 of our cars could lead the hearse from Foxrock to Kilternan cemetery around noon on Friday. Exact times will be on RIP later today.
Edit / update - about a dozen cars have been organised for this, thanks to everyone.

Very sad news. Charlotte and I have only been to a few TDC events but bumped into Cathal very time and always thoroughly enjoyed meeting him.
Ironically Charlotte was schoolfriends with Grainne but never knew the connection to Cathal until today. Terrible sad. RIP

Cathal competed in various motorsport disciplines, his fleet including Minis, Mazda MX5 and most recently in Suzuki, always with good humour and a big smile.
Here's a must see video posted by Cathal some time back, of his run up Moll's Gap with Colm O'Doherty on the notes.

Always good memories of Cathal, Rest in Peace.
